Key Compliance Requirements for Auto Dealerships

FTC Safeguards Rules 

The FTC Safeguards Rules apply to non-banking financial institutions, including auto dealerships that handle consumer financial data. 

Risk Assessments: 

  • Conduct regular written risk assessments to identify both internal and external threats.

Access Controls:

  • Implement role-based access and monitor user activity.

Encryption:

  • Encrypt customer data both in transit and at rest.
    Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Required for all users accessing sensitive customer data.

PCI DSS

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is mandatory for any organization that processes, stores, or transmits credit card data. Version 4.0 introduces major changes to address evolving cybersecurity threats.

Client-Side Security:

  • Requirement 6.4.3: Maintain an inventory of all scripts running on payment pages.
